ReplyDeleteI got an sms today saying that i won R960 0000 and i must phone and quote Ref R1873 on cell phone number 0730946327. A rude Heavy accented Nigerian answered the phone and asked me my name and surname immediately i realised that this was a scam and told him off, with this he proceeded to swear at me and put the phone down.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! Your number no. Won 960,000.00. In IRB Rugby 2011 wold cup promotion, with ref no. NZ441 Call 0732076711. To activate & claim your prize.
ReplyDeleteI received this SMS yesterday and my wife received exactly the same sms today, they did,'t even change the ref no.
I knew this was a scam the moment I saw it because of the following: 1. Why would there be a promotion on something after the event had taken place? What is there to promote?
2. Always look for grammar and spelling mistakes. These Nigerians, Somalians and any other country in Africa north of South Africa are clever, but stupid. They can't spell and don't know there grammar. A promotional company wouldn't make these mistakes.
3. They always ask you to contact them. Why? Because they don't want to waste money calling you. If you really won R960,000.00 , don't you think a promotional company would at least be calling you to congratulate you on your prize?
4. If your curiosity does get the best of you, and you do deside to call, don't give them your personal information. If you want to see where this thing goes, give fake information.
5. The moment they ask you to buy vouchers, of any kind, or tell you to pay a certain amount in bank transfer costs, you know its a scam. I spoke to a promotional company a while back and were told that's the last thing on earth they would ever do. If someone won, they just pay the money straight into your account, no questions asked, no transfer costs.
The reason I'm giving you all this information is so that you will know what to look for. I don't want people falling for these ponzy scams and keep enriching criminals. As long as people are falling for these scams, they will never end.
Its a scam
ReplyDeleteGot the same sms, ref nz441 & cell 07232076711 - their physical address is claimed to be the SBSA Bldg, 5th floor, 275 Long Avenue, Capetown.
ReplyDeleteThey want either bank details for an eft xfer failing which they claim that DHL couriers will deliver within "hours" @ the address of your choice - even the work address is acceptable!
This one asked for my name and initials, the work address is acceptable, quote the ref no, provide my cell phone number and lastly your email address.
Have provided the details, as requested, my cell phone is a p.a.y.g. and gave the work adress NOT the home address plus I will be logging a secure message on the SBSA internet banking for this to be FW to SBSA security for investigation into the physical address claimed.
Lets see what happens!?
Got same SMS to phone 078 684 3963. Spoke to "Mark Tommy" - sounds Nigerian. My ref No. was also NZ441. He gave me landline no. 021 813 6190 which I phoned and same guy answered. Was also told money (R180,000.00) can be paid by EFT or cheque by 1pm today. Ja right!! DO NOT FALL FOR IT!! MONEY IS TIGHT FOR MOST PEOPLE, BUT IF YOU REALLY WON MONEY OR A PRIZE - THE COMPANY WILL BE ABLE TO GIVE OUT MUCH MORE INFORMATION. DO NOT LET THEM GET YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!!! OR EVEN COMPROMISING YOUR PRIVACY TO GET INFO OUT OF YOU!
ReplyDeleteI am very worried. I gave my office address, email, and phone numbers. I did not give anyone my home address, but once I called on my home phone so can they trace the call and find my home?
ReplyDeletePlease advise

ReplyDeleteI then called Gavin, a man with an Indian accent who said he was in Cape Town. He asked how would I like to receive my cash prize, via cash cheque or EFT. I choice cash cheque and he ask me to sms him the following information; name, address, reference number, Cell phone number, occupation, age and email address. Garvin then ask me to call him back 15 minutes after I send him them email.
I didn't send the sms or call him back!!!
